FlashBoss - German Roots

The Oldest Layer of English

Before 1066, English was a Germanic language. The words that survived from that older English are still the ones you reach for first: house, drink, eat, fight, begin, understand. Short. Physical. Blunt. They're the words children learn, the words you think in, the words that carry weight without effort.

German Roots is a 1,000-word vocabulary course built on this Anglo-Saxon foundation. An English course, taught through the building blocks the language inherited from its oldest ancestors.

What You'll Learn

The pack covers the prefixes, suffixes, and root words that form the backbone of everyday English:

• Prefixes like fore-, over-, un-, mis-, out-

• Suffixes like -ness, -dom, -ful, -ish, -hood, -ly

• Root words that recur across hundreds of compounds and derivations

Once you see the pattern, you stop memorizing words one at a time. You start recognizing families. Forethought, foresight, foreword, forecast — one prefix, one logic, four words you no longer need to look up.

Two Audiences

For native English speakers, German Roots is a course in the etymology of your own language. Most of the words you use every day come from this layer, but you've never been shown the seams. This pack makes the structure visible.

For ESL learners from northern Europe — Dutch, German, Scandinavian, Frisian — German Roots is a bridge. You already know half these roots from your own language. You just haven't been shown the crossing. This pack makes the connection explicit and turns shared ancestry into an unfair advantage.

How It Works

• 1,000 words across 5 tiers of ~200 words

• 47 thematic clusters of about 21 words each

• Every card includes a definition, an example sentence, and notes on usage

• 582 cards name the modern German cognate — father and Vater, brother and Bruder

• 458 cards name the Norman or Latin twin beside the Germanic word — brother and fraternal, father and paternal

• 48 reference lessons, one at the head of each cluster

• Master 80% of a cluster to unlock the boss fight

• Defeat the boss to graduate the cluster permanently

• Spaced repetition on Fibonacci intervals — the better you know a word, the longer before you see it again

Accessible from the start, with no prerequisite packs.

Part of the Roots Series

German Roots is one of four etymological vocabulary packs for English:

• German Roots — the Anglo-Saxon layer.

• Norman Roots — the French layer that arrived in 1066. Government, law, cuisine, social register.

• Latin Roots — the scholarly layer. Scientific, medical, and academic vocabulary built from Latin prefixes and stems.

• Greek Roots — science, medicine and ideas. The roots English quarried out of Greek, and the international vocabulary they built.

Each pack stands alone. Together they cover the vocabularies English is made of.
